Expressions of interest
Expressions of interest may be lodged in writing via email or hard copy to the Electives Officer at our postal address giving specific details of the period/s you are interested in.
Direct approaches to individual departments within the Hospital will not be accepted.
Enrolment procedure - for successful applicants only
A successful application is one where:
- if a vacancy exists for the period you request
- you receive an offer of placement from the Electives Officer, and
- you accept the offer.
The Electives Officer will send you an official University of Sydney Elective Application Form.
In addition to this, successful applicants will be required to supply the following information:
- Payment authority form for administrative fees* of the appropriate amount.
- Medicine Elective Enrolment Form* - PDF - for payment of the AUS$100 enrolment fee.
- Prohibited Employment Declaration (PED) form* - PDF
- Criminal Record Check (CRC) must be submitted.
If there is a delay in obtaining the CRC, confirmation of your elective can be given pending receipt of the CRC. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMMENCE YOUR ELECTIVE WITHOUT A VALID ORIGINAL CRC. - A Declaration* regarding notification of any change in circumstances affecting the PED or CRC.
- A Declaration* regarding vaccination & infectious diseases.
- Insurance: Students are required to provide written proof from their university or other appropriate body (in English or with a certified translation) that they are covered by insurance for public and professional liability (including medical malpractice) while doing their elective in Australia. Personal health insurance and/or travel insurance should be arranged before coming to Australia.
* These forms will be supplied with the Elective Application Form.
The above documentation can be faxed through for confirmation of a place in the first instance, pending receipt of originals, however you must send the originals as soon as they have been completed.
Fees

Payment for your elective should be sent only with an official application form. Do not send any money until you have received an official application form. Fees are non-refundable.
Application conditions
Elective students should note that they will not be attending Medical Program small group learning sessions, although they may spend time on the wards, attend lectures, Grand Rounds, ward rounds and other teaching sessions. Elective students will normally receive Internet access for email but will not have access to the University of Sydney Medical Education Network.

Applications must be made on the University of Sydney Elective Application Form supplied by the Electives Officer at the Children's Hospital at Westmead. Prospective students must submit a letter of recommendation from a senior faculty member of their school. The application form and letter of recommendation should be submitted at least three months prior to the desired starting date. No arrangements can be made until the relevant documentation and payment are received.
A non-refundable course fee (see "Fees" above) must accompany the application form or it will not be processed. Payment from non-Australian students can be made by Mastercard or Visa Card only and by completing the details on the payment form. No electronic transfer of funds is acceptable.
Financial assistance is not offered. Concession Student travel is available on public transport to students who are residents of New South Wales. Overseas elective students are not entitled to concession travel.
If accommodation at the hospital is required, this may be booked once approval of a place is given and an application form lodged. It should be noted that there are limited rooms for University of Sydney students, which controls the availability of accommodation for overseas elective students.
It is the responsibility of the visiting student to obtain the necessary visa(s) from the Australian Consulate in the country of study, for entry into Australia. During the elective an elective student may not take a leave of absence from an elective program without the permission of the Discipline of Paediatrics & Child Health.
At the end of the elective all elective students should return to the Electives Officer a completed evaluation form signed by their mentor before they depart.
Duration of elective
Elective Placements at The Discipline of Paediatrics & Child Health and any of its affiliated teaching facilities are for a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of eight weeks. We do not accept students during the Summer Holiday period (mid-December to early February).
Students wishing to stay longer than eight weeks may do so at a cost of $500 for each week of their stay. An exception will be made in the case of students from New Zealand who may apply for up to ten weeks at the normal elective rate. Electives may be split between two disciplines.
Students should bring clothes suitable for wear on the ward (shirt, tie, etc). Please note that jeans and training shoes are not acceptable.
