Biographical details
Louise Baur is a consultant paediatrician at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, the main paediatric hospital in Sydney, where she is Director of Weight Management Services. She is Founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Pediatric Obesity (http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/title~content=t725414071). Among her various community roles, she is a Director of World Vision Australia.
Research interests
Louise Baur's current research interests cover the basic science, clinical and population health aspects of obesity and prediabetes in children and adolescents. They include:
• the effective management of child and adolescent obesity and insulin resistance, including several community-based RCTs underway or recently completed (PEACH, HIKCUPS, Loozit) and hospital-based trials (RESIST);
• mechanisms and management of obesity-associated complications, including orthopaedic abnormalities and obstructive sleep apnoea;
• the determinants of obesity, including the longitudinal Nepean Study of adolescents in western Sydney;
• obesity in special patient groups eg patients with acquired brain injury or developmental disability;
• population-based approaches to obesity prevention, including early intervention with first-time mothers, changes to marketing of foods etc;
• measurement of physical activity in preschool children;
• inflammation in insulin resistance and obesity.
These studies are being undertaken with a range of collaborators at The Children's Hospital at Westmead, on the wider University campus, in other parts of Sydney and elsewhere.
Louise Baur is a Director of the NSW Physical Activity, Nutrition & Obesity Research Group (formerly Centre for Overweight & Obesity), a research centre based at the University of Sydney with a primary focus on population health aspects of obesity, nutrition and physical activity (web-site: http://www.coo.health.usyd.edu.au/). She is a member of the Steering Committee of the University’s Institute of Obesity Nutrition and Exercise (http://www.medfac.usyd.edu.au/research/units/ione.php). She is also a Director of the Australasian Child & Adolescent Obesity Research Network, an Australia-wide collaboration of paediatric obesity researchers (web-site: http://www.acaorn.med.usyd.edu.au/about/index.shtml).
